WOW!! This man is seriously delusional. Has he never heard the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder??" So you don't find black women attractive? Fine. That's your opinion that you are entitled to. But is it really necessary to go and say that to say that publicly? Black women have been struggling with inferiority complexes since the day we were brought over here by whites. Being a black girl myself, I know how it feels to struggle with an image of "White Beauty" that is exalted and praised above any other in our society. But I must say, I've become quite comfortable in my own skin and I love who I am. So does my boyfriend, who just happens to be white :]P! My poin is, we aren't lookin for anyone's approval or permission to be considered beautiful. We ARE, and always have been. And if you don't agree, well, thats just fine. Just try to keep the " research findings" you "found" when you were high on opium to yourself.

I am the 48%. I am a 43 year old african american female who was diagnosed with herpes 13 years ago after being in a 4 month long monogamous relationship with a career military man who was diagnosed with herpes 3 months before meeting me and was too afraid of rejection to tell me. I have suffered in relative silence for the past 13 years and have shared my story with others many times over the years and I have yet to tell my story and not have someone say, "I have it too", or "that happened to my cousin/sister - would you mind talking to them?" - all of these women were black women. Black folks wake up - we are losing ourselves in our own blindness!

Another problem I have with period pieces set in the south is that apart from the color purple is that these movies never really has the main center of focus as the lead or to ever tell the story themselves. It's almost like black folks can't speak for themselves because they always need a third party (9 times out of 10 white) to represent us. When there is a movie that focuses on a black characters point of view I find that its never a box office hit or given any real recognition until after the fact it's been out for a long period of time. And it seems like now that movies that are catered to us are almost always (forgive me anyone who gets upset) dumbed down as far as I see it. They are the new blaxploitation fims that has the same plot over and over. I'm not sure if it's just me but my white peers sometimes see these movies and believe that this is the way all black people act leaving me to constantly explain that in disbelief. Things like this make it harder for me and other black students to be looked as equals while also looked at as a ambassador for anything involving the black culture such as slang or down to even where the tree at. Sometimes it's innocent but then there are those who mask their hatred and pass on ignorance as fact. For an example I was told "kids" who play on the blocks outside are more likely to be drug dealers or statistically we have lower I.Q's. I've met people bold enough to say this out loud and I proved them wrong but it gets to a point where it draining there are so many things we as people have to prove we got a long road to travel.

so whats the option? not confront the kind of cruelty and violation that slavery brought on black people and black women? i admire tarantino for taking an unflinching approach to the topic of slavery. of course it will make people angry but he would be doing a disservice to the memory of the millions who were violated, abused and killed in the name of the US slave trade by taking a soft approach.

Now that some time has gone by, whether, or not I think "the Help" was a good or bad film (I personally disliked it), isn't the point. It wasn't the point with most of the people who had issues with it. Not with if the portrayal of the life of a maid at that time was accurate or not, but more with the fact that these types of films are the only films that Hollywood seems to get behind and produce when it comes to stories about black people (other than inane comedies). The other problem is why do so many black stories have to be told from the perspective of a white protagonist? White people seem to have no problem with it, but I wonder what their response would be if Hollywood found a way to shoehorn a black perspective character into the majority of stories about their culture?

The point. in my view, and please forgive a wasp his upbringing, is that all people are supposed to feel completely outraged at this treatment of people. But it wouldn't accomplish that , because it's a Tarantino film and despite these films making people like you, and i, and other thinking people think about whats wrong in our society, it won't cause enough people to come out of the movie theater talking about how our society needs to be fixed and those who treat women in this manner or thing of black people in such a way should be brought to justice. No, they are going to be talking about that "bad ass slave" going and killing the people who did it. And if that's not how the script goes, forgive me, it's going to be an even worse movie because justice will not have been done at all.
